Top Beauty Rituals to Perform Before Prom

Prom is all about looking and feeling beautiful and confident. Start preparing for the most important social event of the school year no more than a week prior to the big day. What are the top beauty rituals to perform before prom?

To make your face glow for pictures, you should stage a DIY facial. Start with a cleanser and then slough away dead-skin cells, making sure to avoid any pimples. To do this, grab a facial scrub like the all natural Burt's Bees Facial Citrus Scrub or Neutrogena Blackhead Eliminating Daily Scrub which are both gentle enough not to dry out your skin. Next, blend a concoction of near boiling water with chamomile tea. Make a tent over your head with a towel. Hold your head 10 inches from the bowl for 5 to 10 minutes. This procedure will open up your pores, allowing the dirt and grim to loosen up. Take a tissue and gently press downward around any blackheads to remove them. Finish up with an acne-fighting clay mask, a skin product that tightens the skin to create a healthy glow.

Top Beauty Rituals to Perform Before Prom

Exfoliating your skin will make it super smooth, and if you plan to tan (fake bake or the lotion variety), exfoliating will help eliminate streakiness. Pay special attention to rough areas like your knees, elbows and ankles. Use a body scrub that contains sugar because it is gentler on the skin and it smells good!

Prom means having killer shoes to go with your gorgeous dress. Unfortunately, most killer shoes are, well, killers on your feet. Wear them in before the big night of dancing. The last thing you want is to be limping around the dance floor with blisters.

Visit your local salon to discuss some ideas you have for what kind of prom hair you want. While you're there, go all out. Get a trim or retouch your highlights so you won't have to do it on the day of the prom. That day will be hectic enough without worrying about the right cut and color. Also, treat yourself to a manicure-pedicure combo. Since you'll be showing off both sets of digits, you'll want them to look sparkling. Pick a color that will compliment your dress.

A day or two before the big dance, do a trial run on your hair and makeup. Make sure the look you have planned out in your head looks right with your dress and on you. Also, remember pluck your eyebrows. Do this no more than a day or two before prom as plucking can sometimes leave redness.

Shave your legs and armpits a day before. Using a thick shaving cream, like Skintimate Shaving Cream for Sensitive Skin, is gentle on the skin and will keep nicks to a minimum. Afterwards, rub a body oil or heavy moisturizer into your skin to keep your legs extra smooth and soft.

Make these beauty rituals fun and relaxing. They are a great way to distress from the other chaos that goes into planning such a big event. Invite your friends in on the action and do these procedures together. It's a great bonding activity to get everyone excited for a fun night of dining and dancing and making memories with friends. Getting to Know Your Skin

Have you taken a trip down the skin care aisle recently? If so, you know you firsthand a gal could spend a small fortune on beautifully packaged creams, oils and treatments. Skin scientists develop hundreds of goodies every year to treat a plethora of conditions. Before you load up on your favorite brands or sign up for experimental case studies, get acquainted with the organ you love the most--your skin. Getting to know your skin and its unique needs is important to keeping it healthy and comfortable.

So how do you know what products your skin needs? It all starts with knowing your skin type. Did you know that your skin type changes several times during your lifetime? Lots of us start with normal skin, and then as puberty arrives we get oilier. Later in life, many factors like sunbathing, childbearing and hormonal shifts can leave us feeling dry. Some women even experience adult acne and rosacea. Skin care needs are personal and different for everyone. Because of this, we need to have a personal approach to purchasing skin care products.

What's Your Current Skin Type

Get to know your skin by knowing your current skin type. Follow these steps to properly identify what type you have.

1. Wash your face with your regular cleanser. Pat your skin dry. Skip the moisturizer.

2. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes then examine your skin under bright light. If possible, use a magnifying mirror to see the tiny details in your skin.

If your skin feels dry all over especially around the mouth, nose and eyes then you have dry skin. You should be using cream based cleansers that contain a light exfoliant. Citrus-based cleansers are too drying and probably not right for you.

If your skin feels dry in some places yet oily in others, you probably have combination skin. Most often, the oiliness is located in the "T-zone." This is the forehead and nose area but oiliness doesn't have to be exclusively in these areas for combination skin. A citrus-based cleanser would be good for you but you'll have to test it to see.

If your skin feels oily to the touch and oil sheen is visible on your skin then you have oily skin. For further verification, a good test is to blot your skin with white tissue paper. If the paper you use sticks to your skin, then your skin is oily. Oily skin needs a gel based or clear cleanser that has a minimal amount of exfoliants.

Know Your Skin Language

Your life is an open book, just take a look at your face if you don't believe us. When you haven't been sleeping or feel under the weather your face shows it. In order to sooth your skin and keep yourself healthy know your skin language. Here are some warnings that the skin sends that essentially mean, "Help!"

Dark circles: Not enough sleep, a vitamin deficiency or an underlying health issue may be to blame. If dark circles under the eyes won't go away after a good night's rest visit your doctor.

Uneven pigmentation: Or another way of putting it is age spots! When spots show up it means "I need sun protection." Once they pop up these spots don't easily leave so being proactive is best.

Sallow-looking: If your skin looks yellow or sickly you may actually need some vitamin D. Anemia is another cause of sallow-looking skin. Visit your doctor if your skin and eyes begin to yellow.

Dry patches: Small dry patches on your face and body can be an indication you need some hydration. Drink lots of water, especially after enjoy caffeinated drinks. Water makes you feel and look beautiful.

The 4 Makeup Products You Should Have When Stuck On A Desert Island

I'm sure all of you women have been asked the proverbial question... "What ONE makeup item would you want with you if you were stuck on a desert island"? I'm sure the answer varies from person to person and might change from time to time based on the trend of the moment. However, I am extending that one product to four. What are the 4 Makeup products you should have when stuck on a desert island?

  • The first essential everyone must have is a facial cleaning product. If you don't have the ability to wash your face in a sink or shower you should have a product available to remove the grime left from the day. You can't have a beautiful face without a beautiful canvas! Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes are capable of removing dirt, makeup, and mascara gently and usually with a single swipe. Since one cannot carry a large plastic case full of towelettes along everywhere she goes, having individual packets like La Fresh Eye and Lip Makeup Remover cloths are perfect.
  • The second product you should own is moisturizer. We've all heard it a million times...use a moisturizer with an SPF daily to save your skin! They say it for a reason! Using a moisturizer can actually make you look younger because dehydrated skin can look dull and sunken in; moisturizer undoes that problem.
  • Next, you should always have a chap stick (tinted if you have a choice). Chap stick not only keep your lips hydrated but if it is tinted, it can also be used as a makeshift blush. Rub some of the stick onto your finger and work it into the apples of your cheeks. This will bring just a touch of shine and a little color to your cheeks. In a pinch tinted chap stick can also work as an eye shadow (be sure your chap stick doesn't have menthol!). Again, all you need to do is rub a bit of it on your fingertip and spread over your lids. Bonus if you chap stick has tiny (key word here) flecks of sparkle. If your stick does have sparkle, do the blush or the eyes color only; don't do both. Having sparkling flecks on your lips, cheeks and eyes is overkill!
  • Your last makeup must is clear mascara. Not only does it make your eyelashes look long and shiny but it also works to tame brows. If you have a few brows that don't want to be tamed, brush a little clear mascara on them to put them into place. The same can be done for unruly flyaways.
  • These items would be my "must haves" on a desert island. They are so versatile that you can do almost anything with them. This is also why they should be the main items hiding out in your purse. If you should ever get caught stranded somewhere you can still pull off a beautiful look without your normal makeup arsenal.
